Tourist Attractions Great Torrington is a friendly, welcoming town, set in the midst of rolling, unspoilt green countryside. An ancient settlement extraordinarily sited on a cliff top with steep drops down to the River Torridge below. This impressive situation offers spectacular views.
In the very heart of Tarka Country, the wonderful landscape has remained practically unchanged since Henry Williamson wrote his classic novel "Tarka the Otter" in the 1920's. Great Torrington for years was valued for its strategic importance. The town had a significant role in the English Civil War, specifically, the Battle of Torrington in 1646 which marked the end of Royalist resistance in the West Country.
Great Torrington today has become well recognised as an important heritage centre for the history of the 17th century. It is a vibrant community and people in the town, proud of their heritage, can often be seen dressed in costume for re-enactments, festivals and celebrations.
Great Torrington boasts a wonderful selection of visitor attractions, quite a coup for a town of this size. From internationally renowned Dartington Crystal Ltd, producing clear, contemporary glassware to export around the world to the small, traditional country craft at Monkleigh Pottery, there is something for every taste and every member of the family. Rosemoor the beautiful Royal Horticultural Society garden, and Barometer World, (with the biggest collection of barometers in the world) are both just outside Torrington, whilst the colourful, new, interactive, 17th century family experience at Torrington 1646, is conveniently situated right in the centre of the "Cavalier Town" The Plough Arts Centre boasts a 140 seat auditorium, a gallery, a dance studio, meeting rooms, a cafe and bar.
